TOUR INFORMATION FOR
GREAT ALPINE TRAVERSE
TOUR OPERATOR: Wilderness Travel
TOUR DESCRIPTION: A moderate hiking trip from one end of the Alps to the other, crossing several borders on foot to get impressions of the Swiss, German, Austrian, Italian, and French Alps. It includes a beautiful, first-class train ride on the Glacier Express and comfortable lodging at mountain huts. This is a Wilderness Travel exclusive; as far as I know, no other company runs a trip like this.
TOUR COMMENTS: This is luxury trekking compared to Nepal or Pakistan - you get to shower at the end of the day, dine on 5-course meals, and relax in comfortable hotels or mountain huts. A company van transports your luggage while you hike so that they're in your room when you reach your destination. There were 3 trip leaders when I went, one of whom was being trained.
The other two trip leaders, Sean Morrissey and Leila Thompson, did a terrific job of designing this trip, routing it through charming villages rather than busy cities. Hard, long days often alternate with slow, relaxing days so that no one gets worn out. If you do happen to get tired, you have the option of riding in the company van or catch a gondola to the mountain hut. Sean and Leila are also the most creative trip leaders I've ever traveled with. The Great Alpine Traverse is their baby, and you can see what proud parents they are by the variety of ways they give it a touch of class.
